OPAL WOOD

Sat. Jul. 05 - 9PM -
MEMPHIS KHAN (with Ryan from OUTPOST)
OPAL WOOD
Languid, sunburned, and somnambulent, Opal Wood's songs recall the sort of Americana-turned-4AD gazing of Mojave 3 and Red House Painters. This is music for a stoned Sunday afternoon, the perfect soundtrack for looking forward to the work week to come or regretting the events of the weekend now passed. Some of Opal Wood's material will be recognizable to those who followed the relatively short-lived Cellmates, for whom he served as principal songsmith and vocalist.
ANGEL OLSEN
Ghosts are everywhere.

THE PROTOMEN

Fri. Jul. 11 - 9PM -
THE PROTOMEN
The Protomen were concieved in 1987, when a diminutive Mississippi child was given a gift for his kindergarten graduation -- A small grey cartridge with a rather misrepresentative cover art. At that moment, six other children, of varied statures and geographical locales, were also given these cartridges, and thus their grooming began. Sixteen years later, in the middle of the state of volunteers and under the tutelage of Doug Mitchell, their paths converged, their fates were made known, and their assembly was made complete.
THE AURAMATICS
Half are from Chicago or so, half are not. Omaha is not overly important to us and neither are horses. In fact, horses are kind of gross, or at least somewhat frightening. And then there is music, which loosely bonds the two halves together.

CITY ON FILM

Sat. Jul. 12 - 9PM -
CITY ON FILM (ex Braid, Hey Mercedes)
City On Film is the name of the new solo project from Bob Nanna of Braid and Hey Mercedes.
SLITHERING BEAST (from Louisville, KY)
The seeds that have since blossomed into Slithering Beast were first sown in the spring of 2006 by songwriter Nick Dittmeier. Homegrown on the outskirts of Louisville, the songs soon began taking form with clear and simple intent-- to play country music the way it was meant to be played, like our country heroes had in the past. Legends such as Dwight Yoakam, Merle Haggard, and George Jones influenced the tone for the music of Slithering Beast-- raw, aimless and, ultimately, unapologetic.
STATE CHAMPION
State Champion is a Chicago band based around the stripped down songwriting of Louisville-native Ryan Davis. Alongside an ever evolving cast of collaborators, Davis builds cryptic narratives, laced with moments of rare yet rewarding lucidity, backed by a strange brand of country-influenced instrumentation that is as often haunting and bare-boned as it is angular and playfully effortless.
BRETT SAXON
Brett Saxon, a Minneapolis native and more recent resident of Brooklyn, NY, has signed his lease amendment and is hitting the road for an extensive summer tour, bringing him through every nook and cranny of the nation. The tour is in support of his as-of-yet-untitled debut full length record, set to be released on By Land or By Sea Records this upcoming July. Brett's songs bring back the story-telling folk stylings of yesteryear, and will always leave the listener feeling a little nostalgic, and very satisfied.

YONI GORDON AND THE GOODS

Sun. Jul. 13 - 8PM -
YONI GORDON AND THE GOODS
Yoni Gordon has never played a show where he did not win at least one person over and make them into a fan. He just works too damn hard and puts so much energy into performing that its impossible not to be swept up in the almost religious fervor that he brings to rock and roll.
TRUMAN & HIS TROPHY
Truman & His Trophy play synth pop with punk overtones. Hailing from Chicago, these kids are poised to turn some heads with their genre defying tunes.
THE ARMOR CLASS
Ambiente. Electronique. Experimente.

PAPERMOONS

Tue. Jul. 15 - 8PM -
PAPERMOONS
Houston duo matt clark and daniel hawkins are Paper Moons and i’m sure they wouldn’t mind being referred to as beautiful, winsome, front-porch folk rock. it’s the stuff of reflective midnight drives or lazy summer afternoons collapsing under the inevitable weight of dusk. The band’s debut four-song 7” (featuring artwork by jacob calle) was released July 1st on Team Science Records. The record has since been met with critical acclaim. If you have the time read a review or two! The band completed a successful tour of the Midwestern United States in October of this year, 2007. Right now they are in the process of writing songs for a possible full length release sometime next year.
THE LONE GUN SOCIETY
Forsyth Company began as Phil Forsyth and The Lone Gun Society three years ago when Phil booked a show at the famously seedy Big Horse Tavern without a band to back him. This band of friends came together in two weeks to meet the challenge. In the subsequent years, the Company's blend of rock n' roll folk weirdo jams has earned them a reputation both as a Chicago underdog mainstay and a riveting live band. Expect banjos, violins and Ring of Fire horns behind the romp n' stomp bass-drum-guitar dynamic that compliments Forsyth's unique songstyles and compelling vocals, backed occasionally by the dynamic Rachel Scienski.
ON AGAIN OFF AGAIN
On Again Off Again is an Indie-Folk trio from Chicago with lots of class. These dashingly clad men will leave a catchy tune in your head while you dance your worries away. With a sound similar to Iron and Wine, Elliott Smith, and Weezer, On Again Off Again is guaranteed to brighten your spirit and relax your soul.
BRETT KNICKERBOCKER
I began writing songs on paper when I figured out that scribbling into the wooden finish of my guitar was not a good idea. Far too cost ineffective, that. Now I gather paper and forge lyrics with my mighty pen. Occasionally a pencil is used, but I have been known to become quite irritated with lead. My music is here because I enjoy creating it. I hope you enjoy listening to it. If so, buy some songs. That would be awesome of you. If you don't feel like buying, well, I personally welcome you to contact me and let me know what you think (this conversation may turn into a one-sided sales pitch, so be warned). Music is for entertainment. Your enjoyment makes me happy. Together let's be entertained.

THE MUTTERING RETREATS

Thu. Jul. 17 - 8PM -
THE MUTTERING RETREATS
You probably already know us as Cari, Chris and Tim. We formed in late 2006 from the ashes of a few other projects. Now the three of us have some big plans for 2007, the first and foremost being an attempt to be the most polite band in the history of pop music. Ok, the most polite in Ohio. Ummm... we'll make sure the door doesn't hit you on the way out.
MISS AUTOPSY
Iowa-born, Chicago-based singer/songwriter Steve Beyerink has been releasing music and performing under the name Miss Autopsy since 2003. At that time he released an album of home recordings called "Ruhr," which mixed loud, thrashing guitars with heavy drum machine beats and a lo-fi recording aesthetic. It went mostly unnoticed, due in part to the sound quality and the unsettling nature of the songwriting and vocals. He played a few scattered shows over the next two years, playing solo while a drum machine ran percussion loops through the PA.

DIRTY TACTICS

Fri. Jul. 18 - 9PM -
DIRTY TACTICS
Dirty Tactics play gritty, aggressive, rock anthems that harken back to the hay day of punk. Nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
INCOMMUNICADO (on A-F Records)

ROOMMATE

Thu. Jul. 24 - 8PM -
ROOMMATE
Roommate began as the solo project of Kent Lambert in 2000 and became a live band in Chicago several years later. Its debut album Songs The Animals Taught Us was released on the Plug Research label in 2006, followed by the New Steam EP in 2007. The band's second album We Were Enchanted was released in April 2008 to strong praise for its "lush, subtly textured mini-symphonies of pop abandon" (Popmatters). Roommate is known for its unusual blend of acoustic and electronic instruments (keytar, banjo, Gameboy, Buchla Music Easel) and for the way Lambert's lyrics straddle and blur the lines between despair, hope and humor: "exploring weighty subjects about the times in which we live, but completely avoiding condescension." (XLR8R)
THE SINGLEMAN AFFAIR
Meditating within his sun drenched Ukrainian Village flat in the spring of 2004, The Singleman Affair began visualizing and recording songs that brought him to a sacred place of multicolored vision and sound. Finding his roots manifested in different cultures and times, he finds his voice in a chimera of lush 60s psych-folk using guitars, sitar, wurlitzer, and pan flute, enmeshed in a tapestry of distant atmospherics and melody.
PAINTED SAINTS (ex mbr of Devotchka, Wovenhand)
Painted Saints hail from Denver/Minneapolis and do the ever so popular spaghetti western-heroin klezmer-chamber country-sad bastard thing. They write tin can and twine romances in a color of rust with backdrops of long wind swept open roads framed by tangled barbed wire and naked telephone poles.

FILF DOS

Sat. Jul. 26 - 9PM -
Rare Faction Crew meets The Ozarks! Part two of their two night concert event. Featuring hip hop and electronic performances from the members of Rare Faction Crew and The Ozarks.
FILF DOS
Filf Dos is MC, Filfy and her DJ/producer, Jive. They've been performing together since 2004 and as Filf Dos since 2006. Filfy stands out amongst a growing list of out lesbian MCs by staying closer to hip hop than any of than the rest -- in other words, "The rhymes aren't all about being a lesbian." They're self described as "break-neck poetry," and as "the act that steals the show" by audiences in NY, SF, Boston and Chi.

EMILYN BRODSKY

Fri. Aug. 01 - 9PM -
UNIVERSE SOCIETY
Everyone knows that the youth of today have been put on and misled by the violent and sexual themes of modern pop culture and contemporary pop music. However, there are still some listeners - young as well as old - who search for music they can dig that is soft, romantic and not too loud. Are you one of them? If so, you should turn your ear towards the Windy City and then turn on to Chicago's Universe Society, who are currently making sounds that people of all ages have been wanting and needing to groove to - sounds that make you think of flowers blowing in the rainbow wind of a passing candy merry-go-round in a magical springtime. The band's pleasing style, based on six-part harmonies, is very much a now sound, a today sound, without being too freaky. They are able to reflect in their breezy songs ideas and subjects that have been lacking in the music scene of today: like rainbows, flowers, merry-go-rounds, candy, springtime, and love.
BROTHER TRUCK
60's-esque psychedelic vocals from Anika Balaconis and Domenico Ferri and pop rock from the rest.
